Europeana highlights - January - March 2022

Moments of note from January to March 2022 include Women’s History Month, some great events discussing topics close to our heart such as diversity and inclusion, and more improvements to the Europeana website.

All three bodies that make up the Europeana Initiative have released their plans for 2022. The Europeana Foundation’s plan focuses on its role at the heart of a common European data space for cultural heritage. The Europeana Network Association looks to contribute to cross-Initiative activities like digital transformation and diversity and inclusion. And the Europeana Aggregators’ Forum shares its plans to expand, strengthen and increase its value.

We started the year by running the Digital Education with Cultural Heritage MOOC in four languages, supporting teachers to integrate digital cultural heritage into their lessons. We took engaged our audiences in Women’s History Month and launched a new exhibition telling the story of the birth control pill. And we continued to develop the Europeana website with improved search filters, a new 'mosaic view' for results, and a warning for sensitive content.

We explored the importance of developing a digital approach with experts representing three fascinating organisations. Find out what a digital strategy is doing for the House of European History in Brussels, the Natural History Museum in London and the Fondation du patrimoine in France.

On Europeana Pro each month, we take a deeper look into one topic through a series of themed articles. So far this year, we’ve interviewed award-winning organisations taking up new technologies, discussed the needs of new professionals in the cultural heritage sector, and explored how the sector is engaging its audiences in Women’s History Month.

We’ve already hosted some great events this year, including exploring the common European data space for cultural heritage with Mobilier National, and Ministère de la Culture de la France. Preparation is underway for this year’s Europeana conference. Europeana 2022 is our first hybrid event - join us online, or in person! And the Europeana XX project reflected on how it is using novel ways to tell the story of Europe and its 20th century heritage.
