Welcome to our new news series dedicated to the exciting and rapidly evolving world of AI tools for the cultural heritage sector! As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries, streamline processes and unlock new possibilities, it is more important than ever to understand the tools at the forefront of this revolution. Our series will bring you closer to the innovators, developers, and thought leaders who are shaping the future of AI applied to cultural heritage, providing insights into the tools that are redefining the way cultural professionals will work, and which will be available on the AI4Culture platform that will go live in September 2024.

Why focus on AI tools?

AI tools are the engines driving the next wave of technological advancements. From natural language processing and audio analysis to optical character recognition and image classification, these tools are not just concepts but practical solutions addressing real-world problems. Businesses are leveraging AI tools to enhance customer experiences, optimise operations and gain a competitive edge. The cultural sector is catching up and AI tools are set to become invaluable in many activities carried out by museums and cultural institutions.

What to expect from our interviews

The series will feature in-depth interviews with a diverse group of experts, exploring topics including automatic subtitling, machine translation, semantic enrichment, image analysis and more.

Via the viva voce of researchers and practitioners, we will speak about the latest innovations in AI applied to the cultural sector; how developers are tackling challenges; how different players are integrating AI tools; and what ethical considerations we should be mindful of while applying these tools.

The goal of AI4Culture is to create a rich repository of resources and knowledge, to consciously advance the field. We believe that understanding AI tools, their capabilities and their limitations, is crucial for anyone in the cultural heritage sector looking to stay ahead in today’s tech-driven world. Whether you're a tech enthusiast, a heritage professional, or simply curious about AI, our series will offer valuable insights and spark thoughtful conversations in our sector.

Stay tuned to Europeana Pro news for our first interview, where Marco Rendina, from the European Fashion Heritage Association, will sit down with Mauro Cettolo from FBK to discuss their tool on automatic subtitling and its potential implications. In the meantime, find out more about AI4Culture!
