The CommonsDB project aims to build an interoperable public registry of rights information for public domain and openly licensed works.
The CommonsDB project aims to develop and validate a prototype interoperable public registry of rights information for public domain and openly licensed works. The project will develop the prototype based on a technology stack that consolidates ISCC codes, rights metadata, and verifiable credentials, and makes information aggregated in the registry available through public APIs. This registry will allow users to verify the rights status of content from multiple sources.
To support this goal, CommonDB will carry out a two-part study that will examine the operational and technical feasibility, identify and solve copyright, public domain and data governance issues to minimise legal uncertainty, and explore the future governance and sustainability of the registry.
At the end of the project, the consortium will publish a strategy paper that discusses the prototype and its approach in the wider context of efforts to build an EU copyright infrastructure.
The project is funded as a Pilot projects and preparatory action (PPPAs) by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
