About the project

The 3D-4CH project will establish an online Competence Centre for 3D heritage, focusing on the preservation, digitisation and knowledge transfer of cultural heritage in the EU and Ukraine. It will build upon projects like 4CH and 5DCulture, incorporate insights from newly started XRculture and 3DBigDataSpace projects and leverage synergies with the data space for cultural heritage and research infrastructures, such as, E-RIHS and DARIAH.

The key objectives of 3D-4CH project include:

1. Advance skills through capacity building: Enhance skills of cultural heritage professionals with online tools, workshops and certifications, integrating multi-language training material from past and ongoing projects;

2. Provide comprehensive services: Create an online platform offering guidelines, standards and best practices for 3D digitisation, fostering innovation in education and tourism;

3. Deploy high-quality 3D content: Support the creation and enhancement of 3D heritage objects within the European data space, focusing on metadata inclusion, publishing, sharing and archiving;

4. Advance R&D in 3D technologies: Foster synergies with initiatives like ECCCH and implement cutting-edge technologies for cultural heritage environments.

Special attention will be given to Ukraine, with efforts to build digital capacity for Ukrainian cultural heritage institutions and to aggregate 3D Ukrainian content. To this purpose, the project will build on the work and operate in close cooperation with existing initiatives, such as the 4CH ‘SUM – Save Ukraine Monuments’, SUCHO (Savinge Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online), Museum of Ukrainian Victory and the ENA Working Group on supporting digital cultural heritage of Ukraine.

The project will benefit from an Advisory Board of scholars and a Stakeholder Panel from European cultural heritage institutions who will provide needs, requirements and validation. A long-term sustainability plan will ensure that data remains accessible post-project, emphasising interoperability and sustainability of 3D models.

The Europeana Initiative is well represented in the project with Europeana Foundation and several aggregators as beneficiaries and the Europeana Network Association as an affiliated partner. The Europeana Initiative will make key contributions towards training and capacity building as well as communication, dissemination and outreach.

The project is funded under the Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) of the European Union.
