The Europeana Initiative is introducing the policy for persistent identifiers in the data space. It contains 20 principles which provide a framework to assess the resilience and trustworthiness of persistent identifiers in the common data space for cultural heritage. By adhering to them, data partners can signal that the resources they make available are suitable for reuse over time.

Persistent Identifiers and the common European data space for cultural heritage

Persistent identifiers (also known as PIDs) address key challenges, such as link rot and inconsistent identification across organisations, by providing stable, citable references that enhance discoverability, proper attribution and interoperability. They play a vital role in supporting the reuse of resources in research, education and creative projects.

Your involvement as a data partner or a potential data partner of Europeana and the common European data space for cultural heritage has been crucial in shaping the policy that directly supports these efforts.

Through the now-closed survey, interactive quiz and live discussions about policy principles, we gathered insights into the procedures implemented by data partners, which have been instrumental in shaping this policy. This input has been crucial for the Europeana Initiative, as the data space steward, to ensure that the policy aligns with needs of data providers and does not contradict already established community practices. By incorporating your feedback, we have refined the principles to assist data partners in building effective workflows for the ongoing identification of cultural heritage resources.

Adhering to the policy principles ensures that identifiers are implemented consistently, managed responsibly, and persist over time, which will increase the trust and integrity of the data space.
