The annual Europeana conference is the leading event in the world of digital cultural heritage, and this year, we are delighted to put the focus on all things tech for EuropeanaTech 2023 - Explore, Engage, Experience: cultural heritage in the data space and beyond. The conference is led by the experts, developers and researchers from the R&D sector who make up our EuropeanaTech community, and they are working hard to put together a conference programme to engage and inspire you. Kick off with onsite workshops
10 October, the first day of EuropeanaTech 2023, will be onsite only and offer a varied afternoon of workshops at the KB, National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague, starting at 13:00.
3D will be a big topic in focus, but participants will also be able to attend workshops to learn new techniques and share knowledge around acoustic heritage, AI and IIIF, and finally end the day with an informal reception.

Hear from expert keynotes
At EuropeanaTech 2023, two keynote speakers will explore the tech that will shape the common European data space for cultural heritage for years to come.
On 11 October our first keynote speaker, Mia Ridge, will share her perspective on active developments around machine learning and AI, from the perspective of user and community-generated content. Mia is Digital Curator at the Digital Research Team The British Library, and has worked internationally as a business analyst, digital consultant and web programmer in the cultural heritage and commercial sectors.
Our second keynote speaker on 12 October will be Brian Katz, who will present research and production efforts around acoustic heritage. Recently, the importance of heritage acoustics has become more visible in the digital cultural heritage ecosystem largely due to the unfortunate destruction, deterioration and repurposing of historic sites. As Research Director at CNRS and works on the project Acoustics at Notre Dame (The Quest to Restore Notre Dame’s Glorious Sound), Brian will be able to shed light on this engaging topic.
Engage in moderated discussions
After the morning keynotes and panels, each afternoon of EuropeanaTech 2023 will kick off with a hybrid moderated discussion, where topics of key importance to EuropeanaTech - and the cultural heritage sector - will be explored collaboratively with the audience. Discussions will cover:
AI and machine learning, and its potential ethical impact on the way cultural heritage has created, managed and shared collections digitally in the past years
The opportunities and challenges offered by AI technologies to cultural heritage institutions
Opportunities and future requirements for the common European data space for cultural heritage

Reflect and network
We are delighted that data poet Mr Gee, who offered rich perspectives on the topics in discussion at Europeana 2022, will be back at EuropeanaTech 2023. At the end of each day of the conference, Mr Gee will uniquely reflect on the discussions from the workshops, keynotes and talks, helping participants onsite and online to digest the rich and varied discussions.
Colleagues attending onsite will also be able to attend a drinks reception on 11 October, to meet colleagues, network with peers and celebrate the return of EuropeanaTech. There will also be a chance to discover the Sound and Vision Museum in The Hague (link in Dutch).
