Building on the EMDS kick-off event held in Amsterdam in June — where leading figures in Holocaust remembrance, research and education shared their visions and explored the evolving landscape of data spaces — this next session will start from the fundamentals: the data itself.
This workshop is specifically intended for professionals who work with data every day, including: metadata managers, collection specialists, digitisation experts, project managers data and system architects.
The workshop will begin by surveying and mapping the Holocaust data ecosystem. It will explore metadata formats, software platforms, data workflows, licensing models, use cases and more—everything that shapes how Holocaust-related data can be created, shared and reused.
The workshop will also launch the development of the project’s Visual Blueprint—a key tool that will help structure and communicate the complexity of this data landscape throughout the project. Expect a fresh, creative approach to how to use visualisations to better understand data and data spaces. Your hands-on expertise will be invaluable in helping the EMDS shape the most effective and engaging ways to do so.
This event is co-organised with Europeana and Dutch Digital Heritage Network (NDE).
About the European Memory Data Space (EMDS)
The European Memory Data Space (EMDS) is envisioned to become an innovative data space ecosystem dedicated to Holocaust-related data. Joining the family of common European data spaces, it will bring together archives, research institutions, commemoration projects and memorials from across Europe. Leveraging vast collections of digitised Holocaust resources, EMDS aims to connect thousands of data sources to create the foundations of the remembrance culture of the 21st century.
The first phase of the project, EMDS - Blueprint, funded by the CERV program of the European Commission, comprises a comprehensive series of collaborative workshops across Europe in 2025-26. Working with various stakeholder groups, they will collaboratively design the Blueprint of the future data space, visualise it and communicate it to a broad audience of professionals and activists involved with Holocaust-related data.
