Digital and Ecological Sustainability of Cultural Heritage
This event, organised by DIGHT-Net, will explore innovative solutions to create energy-efficient infrastructures and promote green computing practices for long-term digital preservation.
As the digital preservation of cultural heritage accelerates, the sector faces two critical sustainability challenges: digital obsolescence and environmental impact. The rapid evolution of digital tools and technologies, while enhancing accessibility, also increase the risk of digital artefacts becoming obsolete. Meanwhile, the environmental impact of digitalisation processes, including energy consumption and scarce resources use, calls for urgent action.
In response to these challenges, DIGHT-Net invites participants to join an online workshop to examine strategies for the sustainable process-design for preserving digital cultural heritage.
This event, part of the New Trends in Digital Culture Studies series, will explore innovative solutions to create energy-efficient infrastructures and promote green computing practices for long-term digital preservation. It will feature the work of the Europeana Climate Action Community's Environmental sustainability practice Task Force.

About DIGHT-Net
DIGHT-Net is a collaborative Twinning project designed to enhance the research capacity of Tallinn University (TLU) in digital cultural heritage studies. With partners from the University of Bologna (UNIBO), University of Amsterdam (UvA), and University of Turku (UTU), the project aims to mobilise and amplify digital cultural heritage research locally, nationally, and internationally. The project focuses on creating a Digital Archive of Juri Lotman and Umberto Eco, digitising the archive materials of Lotman, and building a semiotic theory of digital cultural heritage. The DIGHT-Net partners bring scientific expertise and international recognition, ensuring the project's long-term impact and fostering collaboration across Europe.
As part of the DIGHT-Net initiative, this workshop serves to address the growing need for sustainable digital cultural heritage practices. It is a critical step in developing research and policy for a more sustainable future for digital cultural heritage, supporting institutions to reduce their environmental impact while ensuring the preservation of cultural treasures.
