In 2020, the Europeana Foundation made its belief in diversity explicit in its organisational statement that ‘cultural heritage empowers us to embrace our diversity and flourish’. This post outlines the approach we are taking to make sure we are indeed embracing diversity and implementing practical measures to embed it in our organisation.
As part of our ‘Strategy in motion’ series, we share the Europeana DSI-4 annual report 2019-2020, which explores highlights of the work done by the Europeana Initiative over the last 12 months. With one project year over, we then look ahead to the next and outline the areas of work we will be focussing on.
Every quarter we'll bring you a round-up of what's been going on across the Europeana Initiative, but to start with let's look back at the last six months (April to September 2020). Highlights in this period include how the sector has responded to COVID-19, a new five-year strategy, updates from the organisations that make up the Europeana Initiative, improvements to our two websites, plus great new content and campaigns, and a new all-digital events programme.
Two complementary digital conferences organised by Europeana and the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek are supporting cultural heritage institutions in their digital transformations, by focussing on the importance of building capacity and skills to do with copyright. The conferences are organised as part of Germany's Presidency of the Council of the European Union, putting cultural heritage in the spotlight for Europe's policymakers.
The Europeana Foundation is an independently governed, non-profit organisation that operates the Europeana platform. To ensure its operations continue to run smoothly and efficiently and to better support the cultural heritage sector and reflect its diversity, the Foundation is changing its governance structure and inviting applications for board members for this new structure.
A new strategy for the Europeana Initiative covering the next five years imagines a cultural heritage sector powered by digital and empowered to make that digital change by Europeana. In this series, we look at the strategy and talk to some of the people who will drive it. Today, we look at the third and final priority of the strategy - build capacity.
